Happy New Year!

Hi all,

We made the 300km drive up to Samburu yesterday from Nairobi ,with a few stops along the way to break up the trip, have a token moment crossing the equator, load up on supplies, etc.  Right now it’s 9:45pm on December 31, and I’m pretty sure everyone is sleeping!  Samburu is a wonderful place, but man, by the time 8pm or so rolls around, you’re ready to call it a day.  All is well, and our students will start writing these posts tomorrow.

  1. Tell Billy I loved packing up his sh** at mom and dad’s house, that was great.

    And dad says hi.

Hope y’all are having a good time so far and enjoy starting 2017 off on an adventure. Don’t let the lions eat you. Just remember- those sounds are just birds.

  2. Jambo Rafikis!

So glad you all survived the 30 hours of travel and made it to Samburu! I thought I would leave my top 5 pieces of advice as you all reside in this beautiful place!

    1) End your reflection everyday on a lighter note by doing Rose, Bud, Thorn! Brett and Karina can expand on this activity but I found it to end the day in a great way!

    2) Assemble a Baboon Squad! Baboons will be like that one roommate you hate for being obnoxious and for eating your food without your permission. Those who rise up to this challenge will have to scare off baboons by screaming and acting like baboons themselves!

    3) listen to the Circle of Life while watching the moon rise over the acacia trees! Kenya had some breathtaking skies so take full advantage of them!

4)Challenge any of the young boys or girls to a dance battle! Everyone in Samburu has crazy dance skills and you might learn a thing or two from them!

    5) Finally, this hopefully isn’t the first time you hear this but really try to build connections with your trip leaders and with the locals. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions, I found that everyone in Samburu is open to talk about pretty much anything so ask away!

I’m so excited for you all! Enjoy everything Samburu has to offer! Brett please give the boys a big hug from me! I miss them all dearly and talk about them all the time!

    Best,
    Valeria
